PAUL URBAN
1995 inductee ... Haverstraw H.S., Class of 1948 ... excelled in five sports at Haverstraw ... was captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams ... three-year varsity performer in football, second-team All-County one year and Honorable Mention another ... also played three years of varsity basketball, making second-team All-County one year ... in baseball, he also earned three varsity letters and achieved second-team All-County once ... he gained one All-Rockland berth in track and competed three years on the varsity in that sport ... also played on the golf team for two years ... he pitched six one-hitters for the Red Raiders’ baseball team ... Urban was the top football punter in the Rockland PSAL for two years ... he also punted as a freshman at Syracuse University ... he signed a baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox while still in high school, but the commissioner of major league baseball, Happy Chandler, nullified the transaction ... Urban, however, could not play his senior year because he was considered a professional ... he later managed Little League teams for three years and Babe Ruth League teams for eight seasons ... he also coached Catholic Youth Organization basketball for eight years, and was a golf teaching pro on public and private courses.
